Discovering riding spots doesn’t always have to be a search-high and low excursion as long as you’ve got creativity on your side. As the president of my local unicycling club, I’m faced with this task on weekly bases. You see, I live in a town where architectural imagination is somewhat lacking. There seems to be far less interesting and innovative places to ride in my home town of about 8,000 people than in unincorporated villages of around 300. Yet from time to time, even after 19 years of living and riding in the same place my whole life, I still manage to find new and exciting places to ride.
One such instance was this summer during a regular club meeting when as usual we were trying hard to find something interesting to ride. We wound up riding the feed mill, which has a small ledge and a two step. I got bored quickly but noticed some pallets leaning up against the building. They were next to the fork part of a fork lift. So I went to work right away, setting up a sort of run-way to embankment to sub rail thing. I ended up riding it for a while, landing some decent tricks and got some okay pictures. But overall, it was one of the most fun spots I got to ride all summer long.
It just goes to show that you don’t need a $4,000,000 facility to enjoy unicycling. You just need creativity and a little ambition.
